The Training Analyst Appointment Process: Myths and Realities

Ronald M. Benson, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the Chair of the Faculty Selection Committee that oversees the review and appointment of TAs/SAs at MPI. He is a former chair of the Committee on Institutes and of the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the former President of the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education. In each of these roles he has reviewed TA/SA appointment procedures at many training programs at Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute (MPI).
Stefanie Speanburg, Ph.D., LCSW, FABP is a full-time, certified psychoanalyst in private practice. As a career psychoanalyst, she achieved Supervising Analyst and Psychoanalyst-of-Candidates qualifications a few years following graduation. She teaches Comparative Contemporary Psychoanalytic Theories and Practice in adjunct roles at Emory University Laney Graduate School, Smith School for Social Work, Georgia Medical College at Augusta, the Emory University Department of Behavioral Health and Sciences Residency Program, and the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute (EUPI). You might recognize her name as the EUPI Director, but don’t let the administrative title mislead you–she shares most of her working hours with patients and supervisees.
Rex McGehee, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst for Children, Adolescents, and Adults at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. Currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he is the past Director of the Denver Institute and past President of the Denver Psychoanalytic Society. Currently, he is the Secretary of the AAPE, Councilor for the ACP and Co-Director of the Western Consortium for Child Psychoanalysis.

Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau, Ph.D. is
a Training and Supervising Analyst and a Faculty member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute as well as of the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society. She has published numerous papers and three books on theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis, in addition to two novels. Dr. Schmidt-Hellerau has been the Chair of the IPA Culture Committee since 2017. She works in private practice in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Dhipthi Brundage, M.D. is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst practicing in Durham. She is a Consulting Associate at Duke University in the Department of Psychiatry. Her clinical practice entails treating adults in an outpatient setting using psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and medications. Her educational role at Duke involves teaching and supervising psychiatry residents. At Duke, she created and directs the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Practicum where she supervises individual residents in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Amanda Hutchinson is a board-certified adult and child psychoanalyst. She has a private practice in Denver, Colorado, where she sees patients of all ages in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Dr. Hutchinson completed medical school, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she is not a Clinical Instructor. she is a faculty member and instructor for the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Western Consortium for Child Analysis.
Oscar Hills is a general psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut, and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. He served for many years as Firm Director of Acute Psychiatric Services and Chief of the Psychiatric Emergency Room at the West Haven Connecticut VA Hospital. He also plays the 5-String banjo with Yale’s Professors of Bluegrass.

Sidney Phillips is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine where he twice won the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award for his teaching. He is also a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis where he served as chair of the education committee and continues to teach and supervise candidates, psychotherapist students , and other trainees. He has written several papers on war trauma, psychoanalytic theory, and narcissism and object relations, and psychoanalytic perspectives on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. He is a two-time recipient of the Ralph Roughton Award of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Daniel Jacobs is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute where he is Director of the Hanns Sachs Library and Archives. Dr. Jacobs is also Director of the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Princeton and Aspen. He is the author of published articles concerning supervision and the plays of Tennessee Williams, as well as a recent novel entitled The Distance From Home.

The challenges of developing and maintaining an analytic practice in the current mental health environment can be daunting and demoralizing. In this seminar, Dr. Arnold Rothstein will present a model that he has developed. This “trusting model,” in contrast to the more traditional “evaluative model,” focuses on analytic attitude and countertransference. In this webinar, Dr. Rothstein will describe the trusting model and employ it as a frame of reference for discussing clinical material provided by Dr. Alistair McKnight.
Arnold Rothstein is a member of the faculty and former Director of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, and an honorary member of the William Alanson White Institute. He is the author of The Narcissistic Pursuit of Perfection, The Structural Hypothesis: An Evolutionary Perspective, Psychoanalytic Technique and the Creation of Analytic Patients, and Making Freud More Freudian, as well as the editor of several books and the author of numerous scientific papers.
Alistair McKnight is a Psychoanalyst Member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, where he is on the faculty of the Psychotherapy Training Program and the Explorations in Mind Program. Dr. McKnight graduated from psychoanalytic training in 2019. He is an Associate Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalytic Quarterly, and the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He is in private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Being an analyst is tough. In this webinar, Dr. Ehrlich will describe her experience of obstacles to building and sustaining an analytic identity and practice, and share what she has found helpful in addressing these obstacles. She will consider such topics as finding analytic patients, maintaining immersion, navigating frequency of sessions, and working teleanalytically. Her reflections will be followed by detailed case material presented by Lorrie Chopra, MS, a graduate analyst. Following the case presentation, there will be opportunity for small group discussion.
Lena Theodorou Ehrlich is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Clinical Supervisor at the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry. She has maintained a lively practice of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and supervision for 30 years. She has written on various topics, including resistances to beginning and deepening analysis, supervisory countertransferences, and teleanalysis. Most recently, she authored Psychoanalysis from the Inside Out: Developing and Sustaining an Analytic Identity and Practice. Available on Amazon.
Lorrie Chopra, MS is a Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychoanalyst in private practice in Livonia, Michigan. She is the Administrative Director of the Mel Bornstein Clinic for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, a nonprofit clinic serving the greater metro Detroit area.

Robin Rayford, M.A., L.L.P., adult and child psychoanalyst Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute (MPI), will present clinical and personal material from her experiences as a candidate in psychoanalytic training at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Her perspective as a woman of color gives us an opportunity to examine the tensions of analytic training for trainees of color, and suggest how to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in psychoanalytic institutes.
She will be joined in discussion by Dionne R. Powell, M.D., adult psychoanalyst, Training and Supervising Analyst Psychoanalytic Assn. of New York (PANY), and Columbia Psychoanalytic Center, Vice-President of AAPE.
When Play and Talk Seem Impossible: Psychoanalytic Treatment of Aggressive Children

Early environmental chaos often leads to seemingly uncontainable aggression. This seminar will focus on the challenges of moving from action to play and words in analytic work with children. Dr. Shaw will present detailed process material from the analysis of an explosive, erratic child whose early life was riddled with ruptures. Dr. Miller will facilitate a discussion of both this case and of the larger technical and conceptual issues involved. In particular, the discussion will address the interface between limit-setting, interpretation, and play in responding to aggressive action within the analytic context.

Towards Transparency and Integrity in Analytic Training

Analytic training requires a thoughtful and empathic method of assessment of candidate progression. Educators have strived to balance subjective impressions and objective data, and take note of traditions and group process. In this webinar, Dr. Arden Rothstein discusses how one institute, PANY-IPE, went through a thoughtful process to improve the transparency and integrity of their assessment of candidate progression. Dr. Rothstein describes a re-conceptualization of progression criteria to demystify the process for supervisors and candidates, and encourage a collaborative learning environment. Dr. Rothstein provides examples of specific difficulties they encountered and how they tried to resolve them. This webinar is 1:40 hours long and includes the presentation and questions from the audience.
