Join us for an engaging webinar exploring the concept of free association. Free association is a deceptively simple concept. It is one of the most frequently and fervently employed tools of nearly every analyst, yet in the consulting room it is invariably caught up in conflict, transference, and countertransference.

Springboarding from material drawn from one analysis, this webinar brings together a number of conceptual approaches from around the world. Discussants will present perspectives on the application of free association to understanding a patient’s inner life and the analytic process.

Alfred Margulies, MD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. He served as Director of Medical Student Education; Director of Out-Patient Services; Co-founder and Director of Education, the Program for Psychotherapy; and Associate Chair of the Department at the Cambridge Health Alliance, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Margulies is recipient of numerous teaching and service awards within the fields of psychoanalysis, and has numerous publications. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Assn and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and has twice been a plenary speaker at the APsA annual meetings.

Eva D. Papiasvili, PhD

Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Institute and Object Relations Institute in New York

Eva D. Papiasvili, PhD, ABPP, is the Global Chair (Europe, North America, Latin America) of the International Psychoanalytical Association’s Inter-Regional Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychoanalysis (IRED) committee, and the Chair of the Tri-Regional Editorial Board of IRED. She is a Training, Teaching and Supervising Analyst at the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Institute and Object Relations Institute in New York. Dr. Papiasvili is member of the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies (CAPS), and a senior clinical faculty and supervisor of the ‘dynamic track’ of the Doctoral program of Columbia University Clinical Psychology Department. She has published journal articles and book chapters covering a wide range of topics in psychoanalysis and clinical psychology, and serves as an editorial board member and special issues editor of Psychoanalytic Inquiry, International Forum of Psychoanalysis, and International Journal of Group Psychotherapy, in addition to being a reviewer for JAPA and Oxford University Press.

Antonio Perez-Sanchez, MD

Spanish Psychoanalytical Society

Antonio Pérez-Sánchez, MD is a psychiatrist, training and supervising analyst, and former President of the Spanish Psychoanalytical Society (SEP). He served as Chair of the IPA Sponsoring Committee for the Portuguese Psychoanalytic Study Group (Núcleo Português de Psicanálise) for several years and has been a member of the European team of the Inter-Regional Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychoanalysis (IRED) since 2014, serving as European Co-Chair since 2023. He is one of the European contributors to the IRED entry on Free Association and has published extensively on psychoanalytic theory, technique, and clinical practice.

Shil Sengupta, LMSW

Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute

Shil Sengupta, LMSW is a certified adult psychoanalyst affiliated with the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He maintains a private practice in Royal Oak, Michigan, and serves as President of the Michigan Council for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He has taught at Northeastern University, published in journals spanning multiple disciplines, and presented at conferences throughout the United States and internationally. His interdisciplinary background in the humanities informs his understanding of human behavior and enriches his approach to psychoanalysis.

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES

AAPE meetings are intended to bridge the practice gaps in the professional knowledge of attendees by exploring new and recent developments in research, theory, technique, clinical knowledge and by offering opportunities to review essential psychoanalytic knowledge. After attending AAPE’s webinar, participants should be able to:

1. Discuss the ways in which the introduction of the structural model modified early understandings of the clinical application of the concept of free association.
2. Identify two technical interventions useful in eliciting free associations during the analytic hour.
3. Summarize the differences between North American and European technical approaches to interpretation of free association.
