“Failed” Cases: Premature Endings in Adolescent and Adult Psychoanalysis

Join us for this webinar exploring the all-too-common experience of analytic cases that end prematurely or abruptly. This session will feature the presentation of one adolescent case and one adult case, with discussions highlighting the intrapsychic factors contributing to these unexpected interruptions and endings.

This seminar is highly relevant for psychoanalysts and candidates working with children, adolescents, and adults.

Mary Landy, MD
Faculty
Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute

Mary Landy is a psychoanalyst based in Indianapolis and serves on the faculty of the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. She has a focused interest in curriculum and teaching methodologies in psychoanalytic education, co-chairing the Study Group on Teaching Psychoanalytic Education for the American Psychoanalytic Association (APSA) and participating in APSA’s Study Group on Teaching and Learning. Mary has also served as chair of the APSA Committee on Psychoanalytic Study Groups and the section on Teaching, Curriculum, and Professional Development. A longstanding member of the curriculum committee at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, she has co-chaired APSA’s annual discussion group on “Failed Cases” for several years.

    Paul Rao, MD
    Candidate
    Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis

    Paul Rao, MD, is in private practice in New Haven and a candidate in psychoanalysis at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. He teaches and supervises in the Departments of Psychiatry and Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine, where he trained in adult and child psychiatry.

      Gail Anderson, MD
      Faculty
      Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute

      Based in Atlanta, Gail Anderson is an Adult Training and Supervising Analyst at the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute (EUPI) and an Adjunct Professor in Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. As Director of EUPI, she expanded psychoanalytic education, working with Emory’s Goizueta Business School to develop curricula integrating psychoanalytic principles into executive education and coaching. She also collaborated with leaders from the Southeastern Child Analytic Consortium to host an annual symposium at Emory. Currently, Dr. Anderson co-teaches ‘Trauma’ and ‘Psychoanalytic Case Conceptualization’ courses, sharing her expertise with psychoanalytic candidates.

        Denia Barrett, MSW

        Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute

        Denia Barrett is a child and adolescent supervising analyst on the faculty of The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and serves as a geographic supervisor for several other institutes. She trained at The Hanna Perkins Center in Cleveland, OH, where she also served on the faculty and was the editor of the Center’s journal, Child Analysis: Clinical, Theoretical, and Applied. Currently, she is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child and a member of the editorial review board for Psychoanalytic Social Work. She has published on topics in clinical work, ethics, and supervision and has presented nationally and internationally. From 2010 to 2012, she served as President of the Association for Child Psychoanalysis.

          Statement of Objectives

          AAPE meetings are intended to bridge the practice gaps in the professional knowledge of attendees by exploring new and recent developments in research, theory, technique, clinical knowledge and by offering opportunities to review essential psychoanalytic knowledge. After attending AAPE’s webinar, attendees should be able to:

          1. Summarize two intrapsychic factors that contribute to premature endings of psychoanalysis.
          2. Discuss two approaches that could decrease the likelihood of disruption in child/adolescent or adult analytic cases.
